Local Charities To Support During The Christmas Season

Deck the halls with boughs of holly, and while you’re at it consider donating some of your leftovers to any one of these local charities this holiday season!

VBJI: The Virginia Beach Justice Initiative was birthed out of a desire to end human trafficking, particularly sex trafficking, in the Hampton Roads area. Their mission is to bring an end to sex trafficking by empowering the residents of Hampton Roads’ cities and the surrounding region through education, awareness, advocacy and prevention campaigns. VBJI depends on donations to end modern-day slavery. Virginia Beach Justice Initiative is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization; your donation to VBJI is tax-deductible. Consider adding a donation to your Christmas list, or make a donation in someone else’s name and count it as part of their present this year.

NATASHA House Inc.: NATASHA House, located in Yorktown, provides both residential and outreach program services that minister to homeless families, namely mothers and their children’s physical, emotional, psychological and educational well-being. Donate to the NATASHA House this holiday season with a monetary gift or purchase a produce subscription through their Seed 2 Table Career Readiness Program.

FISH, inc.: FISH, inc. provides food, hygiene and cleaning products, clothing and small housewares to persons in need in the greater Williamsburg area. They accept donated clothing items, fresh produce from local farmers, and houseware items. They are currently in need of nonperishable food items and toiletries (a list can be found on their website) as well as financial donations. All contributions are tax deductible.

Peninsula Rescue Mission: The Peninsula Rescue Mission is a shelter located in Downtown Newport News that cares specifically for homeless men. Since 1966 they have opened their doors to thousands of men. The shelter operates a thrift store further up in Newport News that is always looking for gently-used donations. If you prefer to donate a monetary gift, visit their website to choose an amount or to set up a recurring gift. The Rescue Mission also accepts volunteers to help serve dinner in their soup kitchen, upon appointment.

ForKids: ForKids is based out of Norfolk, and works to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty for families and children. They are currently hosting a holiday toy drive at their shop on Granby Street (November 26 – December 10, 2018). Drop off new, unwrapped toys for boys or girls at their location, or order toys online through Smile.Amazon.com and a 0.5% of your total cart will be donated to ForKids. For more information, call (757) 622-6400 x137 or email volunteer@forkidsva.org to arrange your drive.

With so many charitable organizations in need locally, consider making this a part of your yearly holiday traditions! Donate to one of these charities, donate your time to a local soup kitchen, or set aside one gift to every family member as a donation in their name to one of these charities.
