It was a day just like any other day. Stuck in the rut of our normal routine: wake up, play, then nap, then play, then dinner. It was a regular day, until I was confronted with what I had slowly been missing.
That day I noticed something about her, something about my daughter that had changed.
Her eyes.
They were no longer the grayish blue that she was born with. No longer were they baby eyes, but instead they had morphed into toddler eyes. Greenish toddler eyes.
When had they started to change? Was the transition so gradual that it was impossible to notice, or had I missed it?
I bit my lip and tried not to cry. That’s life, right? In what seems like the blink of an eye moments are gone, years have passed, and a baby’s eyes lose their grayish hue.
It was a lesson in taking notice of the every day things that seem simple, but are indeed extraordinary. It wasn’t too long ago that she was rolling around on the floor, and now? Now she is running. She is moving her legs so fast that her little feet can’t always keep up with the ground beneath her. It wasn’t long ago that she babbled her first mama and now she’s mimicking animal sounds. It happens so slowly, yet it’s all over so fast.
Some things will never change: there will always be clothes that need washing, closets that need organizing, and Lord knows there will always be dishes. But the things that will change, those things that once they’re gone you never get back? Those are the things worth making time for.
